HUNDRED SQUARE MILE AREA

VAST MATERIAL STORES,

(Received 10.10 p.m.)

LONDON, Aug. 29

A French communique states: "We continued to pursue the enemy who, uncler our pressure, precipitately retreated on • a front of thirty kilometres. We have reached the heights on the left bank of the Somme from Cuzancourt as far as the east of Nesle. Further south we reached the western bank of the Somme Canal, along the greater part of its course between Nesle and Noyon.

"North of the Oise we captured Pont Leveque, Vauchelles, and Porquericourt.

"Our advance to-day exceeds ten kilometres at some points. "Forty villages have been recaptured. "Great quantities of material abandoned by the Germans include three heavily laden trains. "Five hundred prisoners were captured in lively fighting. between the Oise and the Aisne. "In the region of Juvigny the Americans repulsed several counterattacks. They also frustrated a big German attempt to cross the Vesle south of Bazoches and Fismette."— A. and N.Z. and Reuter.
