The newspapers -tre enthusiastic over the Verdun army's reply to the peace proposals and General Nive'le's brilliant debut as Chief-in-Command. He and General Petain planned vast operations which General Mangin carried out on General Nivelle's signal. At ten in the morning' five attacking divisions dashed forward under the protection of guns of all calibres and they immediately penetrated the enemy's trenches, whc-:e occupants were unable to oppose seriously. Numerous machine-guns were used it VaetnrauviJle, where" the fight : ng. '.hou 1 ;!! short, was very lively. The French-were a'-mirabiy led and dashed to the slopes of Poivre Hill, crushing all opposition, yelling aud shouting. Above the din watchers could cle'srly hear the notes of the "Marseillaise" as Vacherauville and Poivre Hill were captured on the rush. The Germans, seeing that resistance was impossible, fell back in good order.
