WATERSIDERS' DEMAND AN IN-
CREASE,
CHRISTCHURCII, May 2
The Petone arrived with coal from Greymouth but the watersiders refused to work her unless riven an advance of threepence per hour. The agents of the Petone and Melbourne, which the men refused vj work yesterday, offered the men the opportunity to work the ships on contract. The men ar e considering the offer. The Dorset arrived for a load of meat for Home and the men agreed to work her at the rate in vogue, as the cargo was under the ht-ad of necessities. At the same lim e the Union sent a telegram to Mr Massey asking him to use his influence to obtain the same rate of wages in Lyttelton as in other ports.
