BARRELS OF FAT.
The by-products form an 'ever-grow-ing source of wealth at the works. Owing to the lack of facilities in the past the blood had not been saved and hundreds of gallons of this, valuable' material have been run into the: sea— to the surfeited satisfaction of the
myriad gulls and other sea fowl which cluster--at the drainage point, and to the enjoyment of various forms of sea life which have discovered this source of food supply. The hides, chiefly for the American market,) are disposed of in Auckland. Tongues, tails, cheeks, horns, livers, runners,- etc., all find a suitable mission in ministering to human necessities. But in a district where dairying is developing the. Hsitor to the works—so recently a scene of industrial activity—was invariably struck by the huge barrels of fat, of which about 100 per month were being rendered, at a value of, something like £10 each, The destiny, of most of this product is the margarine works at Home so that it will reappear upon the tables of the people when bread and "butter" are being enjoyed. ■, This expression is not intended slightingly, but is recorded merely as a fact. Allowing that it is clean and wholesome—which it appears to be as it.is casked at the works—the substance no doubt fills a requirement of human economy.
