£6000 WORTH OF BEEF RUINED.

'. ■ ■ A very destructive tire occurred at the Whangare'i Freezing Company's. works, at Whangarei Heads, on Saturday evening. The outbreak ; occurred at about 7.30 o'clock and shortly afterwards messages were receivJ ed in Whangarei saying that the whole works were then being totally de- /. molished by fire. Fortunately, these reports proved to be exaggerated for I by the strenuous efforts of the staff at the works—aided by a sp.lendid sup.".ply of water which the untouched machinery department was able to pump " from the sea—-the outbreak was confined to the freezing block in which ' . the fire began.
