GROSS NEGLIGENCE.

BOY'S HAND SHATTEEED,

COMPENSATION AWAED SUS-

TAINED.

AUCKLAND, May 7,

At the Supreme Court to-day. Mr Justice Cooper gave his decision on the motion for a new trial in the case of John Snowden against the Waitomo County Council, in which the •lory awarded plaintiff £300 damages for injuries to his left hand, which had been shattered by detonators found neaT an abandoned forge.

The jury held that plaintiff's injuries were due to the carelessness of the council's workmen. Plaintiff, a boy of eleven years, was playing with other boys near an abandoned forge upon unfenced land about a chain from the main road. His Honour commented severely on the gross negligence on the part of both the Government and county council workmen in leaving detonators loosely about, and dismissed the motion for a re-trial with costs.
