DOMINION MUSEUM.
BOARD OF SCIENCE AND ART CONTROL OF PUBLICATIONS.
The Science and Art Bill, which is in charge of the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, provides for the constitution and control of the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, and the publication of scientific works. It says that the Art Gallery shall be established either within the Dominion Museum, or in an adjoining building, each being subject to the control of the Board of Science and Art. Until the site of the nmseum and art gallery is determined and the building erected, the Government museum in Museum Street shall be the Dominion Museum, under control of the board. Moneys are to be appropriated by Parliament for establishment and equipment of the museum and art gallery, and for the acquisition of articles and documents of scientific, artistic or historical value. The Board of Science and Art shall consist of the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Director of Geological Surveys, the Director of the Dominion Museum, the president of the New Zealand Institute, an officer of the Department of Agriculture (to be appointed by the Minister of Agriculture), the Government Printer, and two persons to be appointed by the Governor-in-Council, each of whom shall hold office for three years. Three shall form a quorum; the Minister, if present, shall be chairman, and, in his absence, the Director of the Dominion Museum. The duties of the Board, with regard to the museum and art gallery, are to "manage, control and direct" these institutions and the staff employed; to acquire (out of funds to be appropriated by Parliament, or through donations) articles, books, and documents of . scientific, artistic, or historical interest, and works of art; and to make provision for public access to such parts of the museum and art gallery as are set apart for exhibition. The board shall also direct the printing of such papers, proposed by the Governors of the New Zealand Institute, as the board determines to deserve permanent record. These papers shall be printed by the Government Printer in volumes uniform with the transactions of the New Zealand Institute. Papers and reports of a scientific nature, issued under the authority of a Government department, and deemed by the board to be of such value and public interest as to deserve permanent record, shall also be printed in uniform volumes each year, under direction of the board. The Governor may direct that historical public books and documents shall be stored in the Dominion Museum.
