CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
The Waipu Caledonian Societyheld their 42nd annual meeting on the 28th August, when the president (Mr Gus McKay) presided over a very representative gathering. The meeting was one of the most enthusiastic annual meetings ever held by the society. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted, the former dealing with the work done by the society during the year, more particularly in connection with the Highland gathering and games held on New Year's Day. Rev. A. McDonald, a recent arrival in the district, who was present as a member, spoke of the manner in which this gathering was held and said that it was one of the best and most pleasant gatherings of the kind he had ever attended, even in Scotland, and that the committee of management really left nothing to be desired in the carrying out of it, everything going off without a hitch and every one appearing to thoroughly enjoy themselves by meeting new friends. Messrs Duncan H. McKenzie and John M. McGregor were elected honorary members in recognition of their continued services to the society. As much of the success of the gathering was largely due to the new stage for dancing and pipe music (recently erected), the timber of which was supplied by Mr A. P. McKay and Messrs R. D. and D. A. .Campbell, and the whole erection of which was performed gratuitosuly by the two latter gentlemen, the sincerest thanks of the society were accorded all these gentlemen; a similar vote was also accorded the Northern S.S. Company for the liberal manner in which they treat the society in running an excursion steamer to suit these annual gatherings, it being pointed out that the return fare from Auckland was only 10s, and for members of the pipe band engaged by the society ss, and concert performers free. The rules of the society were so altered that in future the financial year closes on March 31st instead of July, as previously, and thus allow the annual meeting to be held in April instead of August. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the outgoing officials and the viper and auditor for their efforts on behalf of the society during the year Mr D. A. Campbell was reelected the society's piper. Mr W. A. Ingram was re-elected auditor, and a strong committee of over 30 were appointed. At the conclusion of the annual meeting business a meeting of committee was held, when the following officials ? were appointed:—President, Mr Dan H. McKenzie; vicepresidents, Messrs Gus McKay, John N. McGregor and John R. McKay; secretary and treasurer, John N. I. McKay.
