ROMAN CATHOLIC NOVELISTS.
"T.P.'s Weekly"' calls attention to the fact that the Roman Catholic priesthood in England has now at least three writers of novels who are popular beyond the bounds of their own church—Dr. William Barry, Robert Hugh Benson, and "John Ayscough" (Monsignor F. Bickerstaff e-Drew). These are all on active service as priests. Canon Barry's novels, "The Two Standards," "The New Antigone," and "Arden Massiter," are eclipsed in popularity by his literary criticisms and appreciations. He is a contributor to the "Cambridge Modern History" and has written a history of "The Papal Monarchy" and the volume "The Papacy in Modern Times" in the Home University library. Monsignor Benson pours out a stream of novels that find an eager public. "John Ayscough" has published "San Celestino" and "Moratz," and is winning a growing popular recognition. It is worthy of recall that Cardinal Newman wrote several stories, two of them—"Gain and IjOss , ' and "Callista"—having been reprinted more than once.
