A PECULIAR POSITION
WELLINGTON, Aug. 27
The position regarding H. Atkinson, the Westland .representative of the team to tour California, is a peculiar one: The New Zealand Rugby Union received a letter signed- "H. Atkinson," posted at Hokitika, dated August 19th, to the effect that the writer could not make the trip. Gillespie, of Wellington, was thereupon selected to take Atkinson's place in the team. The New Zealand Union has now been notified by the West Coast Union that there is no truth in the statement that Atkinson has withdrawn from the team.
The Zealand Union has telegraphed to-day to Atkinson explaining the receipt of the Hokitika letter, which it assumed he had written, and asking him to make a statement on the subject.
