FLOODS IN OTAGO.
SUSPENSION OF TRAFFIC.
TAIERI PLAIN UNDER WATER
NUMEROUS RAILWAY WASHOUTS
DUNEDIN, Aug. 25
Three-fourths of the Taieri Plain is under water. The rain fortunately ceased early this morning.
The Outrim train traffic is entirely suspended, there being five feet of water at the bridge. The Waihola Lake is brimming, but luckily the south line is quite clear, and trains are running as usual. In Otago Central traffic is entirely suspended, and is likely to be so for several days. Half a dozen slips have occurred on this line, one being serious owing to a breakaway between Lindon and Barton, a platform having collapsed, leaving the rails hanging.
On the Lawrence line traffic is also suspended. A train left Lawrence this morning, but found two washouts at Waitahi, and had to turn back.
On the north line a washout has occurred at Blueskin; more serious than that is another slip at Puketeraki, which caused the cancelling of the eight o'clock Christchurch express. This slip will probably take several days to clear away.
