PATIENT ASSAULTED BY WARDER.

CASE BEFORE COURT

CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 22

In the Supreme Court to-day Joseph Martin, charman, was charged with assaulting McMeekin, a mental hospital patient, and causing injuries which resulted in the latter's death. A second count charged Martin that being an attendant at the mental hospital he assaulted a patient. Mr. Stringer, for the Crown, said McMeekin was about 42. He was medically examined on his admission to the institution, and found to be physically strong. He suffered from eye trouble, which made him almost blind.

Mrs. McMeekin gave evidence that her husband was never violent.
