CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER

PALMERSTON NORTH, Aug. 22

The trial of William Clemens and Elizabeth Ireland, charged with attempting to murder Fredrick Ireland on August 4, was concluded yesterday. The jury found Clemens guilty of doing grievous bodily harm, and acquitted Mrs Ireland. Clemens will be sentenced to-day. A HEAVY SENTENCE. Clemens, a young man found guilty of assault with intent to do grievous bodily hai'm to Fredrick Ireland at Pukehinau, came up for sentence today The Chief Justice took into account "Trim 4 to two years' hard labour at I,nthe youth of the accused and sentenced vercargille, and after that three years' reformative treatment. His Honour added that there appeared to be something behind the shooting that did not come out in the evidence.
