EXTRAORDINARY LONGEVITY.
Mr Thomas i Morris, of Whananaki, forward the appended clipping from the newspaper "Truth," published in Jerusalem:—
"A correspondent from Kovno writes ; __i have been privileged to . see a J-eV who has attained his 147 th year. His name is Abraham Smith. He was compulsorily enlisted : in the . Russian Army in 1785, during the reign of Catherine, when he was seventeen years old. He, with a few others, escorted Napoleon I. to the Island of Elba. He possesses a great number of medals which testify to his heroism and brilliant dash in the various battles in which he fought for his country. Now, this phenomenal individual has . returned to his native place to ask assistance from the Government for his old age.
For the authenticity of these facts I can vouch personally. There are some orthodox Jews who urge him, to end his days in Jerusalem. By the way, I am assured that this wonderful old man's teeth are uninjured and that his eyesight is absolutely unimpaired."
