HOW THE JESSIE NICCOL SANK.
ANCHORED TOO CLOSE IN.
A. THRILLING ACCOUNT.
INVERCARGILL, April 12. The auxiliary schooner Huanui, which left the Bluff last month for Macquarie Island, returned to Invercargill to-day with Mr Joseph Hatch (lessee of the island) aboard. Mr Hatch stated that the Jessie Niccol survivors reported that, after landing a party at the island in very rough weather, the Jessie Niccol slipped her moorings and stood out to southward. The shore party saw her miss stays three times and then let go her anchor near the shore. The shore party could not launch a boat, and the captain and crew refused to come ashore; but half an hour later the second mate and three, seamen came off. About an hour later a ■ heavy sea struck the Jessie Niccol and she capsized. Captain Holmes was seen to be hit by a water tank, and then he disappeared-. The cook was washed away in a heavy sea, and so later was the mate. An official inquiry into the wreck was held yesterday, and the Court found tfrrst the vessel was properly equipped, and that the casualty was due to the dangerous nature of the coast; adding that masters of vessels should be instructed to anchor at night a quarter of a mile outside the Nugget Rock.
