DEFENCE REORGANISATION.
PERMANENT MEN FOR FIELD ARTILLERY.
THE COMMANDANT'S LATEST MOVE.
Major-General Godley, Commandant of the Forces, who has spent considerable time since his arrival in New
Zealand in organising work connected with headquarters and the Territorial Force generally, has now turned his attention to the R.N.Z.A., otherwise the Permanent Force.
Under the new scheme provision is made for an extra field battery in each district and it is necessary, therefore, to import a considerable number of ..i w guns and other equipment for their efficient working.
It is obvious that with additional giins it will be necessary to have permanent men to look after them and i.< give instruction to the Territorials '.% ho will be called upon to man the batteries. With this end in view the R.N.Z.A. will be split into two sections, one for fort and the other for field work. It is understood that the establishment of the R.N.Z.A. will remain as at present, but that a number of men will be called upon to do field instead of fc-rt work. Volunteers for the former are now being called, and the most suitable men will be selected for the new arm «.f the service. The transference of a rumber of gunners to the field artillery will leave the garrison gunners very short-handed, but from all accounts the deficiency, for the present zX least, will not be made up.
