TUESDAY.

DISTRICT COURT JUDGES. Mr McGowan moved the second reading of the District Courts Act Amendment Bill, whioh extends the jurisdiction of District Courts. Mr Herries urged that the powers of District Court judges should not be increased unless their status was improved, and they were made independent of the Administration.

Captain Eussell expressed the opinion that if the best men were to be secured the salaries of District Court judges] should be at least £1000 a year.
