EXCEISIOR RINK, WHANGAREI.
This rink was opened on Thursdays . 23rd august, by Messrs W. A. Bessell and M. J. Whitelaw, who have already inaugurated branch rinks at Kamo and Kaurihohore. The attendance was good, many members of the former club being present, while not a few learners of the art were indulging in the usual initiatory series of struggles and falls, greatly to the amusement of the spectators. Amongst the lady rinkists Mrs H. Sissons is an acfedmplished skater, and looks charming gliding along the floor. Miss Clendon is a most graceful skater, her attractive costume and figure being much admired. Miss Street rinks grandlj, she can put on tremendous speed. Miss B. Wilson skates very prettily. Miss M. Whitelaw is a charming rinkist, and her cardinal toilette becomes her exquisitely. Mrs Boult is rapidly acquiring the art of roller Skating. Mr W. Wilson is one of the best gentlemen rinkists, the swaying motions in which he indulges being very effective. Mr J. Wilson is decidedly a masher rinkist. Mr N. Haynes rinks gracefully. Mr Leslie Mair can go either backwards or forwards with equal facility Mr J. Beyburn can also advance and retire on rollers. Mr Donaldson is quite at home on wheels. Mr H. Cooke takes the palm as a fancy skater. He can skate on the two front wheels alone or on the two back ones quite easily Mr N. G. McKay mtist not be omitted, as his One leg performances cause shouts of admiration from all beholders. Mr M J. Whitelaw will soon be a graceful exponant of the art. The Volunteer Band was in attendance and discoursed sweet strains during the evening. A Fancy Dress Carnival takes place here on Thursday, 20th September, wMch we anticipate will be largely attended.
