THE MAORI ACCIDENT.

Auckland, Thursday. The police received a telegram from Constable Mitchell, at Paeroa, to the effect that he made enquiries re reported murder of the native Eounui, at Hukutaia, and found the facts as follows : — The native in question, desiring to drink at a creek in the bush, stood his axe on the bank, and leaned down to drink. While drinking his axe fell and struck him on the neck, inflicting a serious wound. He was afterwards found by the natives, who imagined by the appearances that he had been murdered. He is likely to recover.
