OTAIKA SCHOOL PICNIC AND SPORTS.
Notwithstanding attractions elsewhere there was a good gathering on Thursday, 26th ult. The sports which started at 11 a.m. were kept going with great spirit until evening closed in, allowing necessay intervals for refreshment. The handicappers, Messrs Fraser and Eeynolds, performed their duties so well that in some instances it was difficult for Mr Harp, who kindly officiated as referee, to spot the winner. Messrs Morgan and Edge acted as tape holders, and Mr Taylor as general manager. The races,- &c, specially set apart for the Otaika children, were all run before the dinner adj ournment. Mr D wyer's boys carrying away the palm. After due justice had been done to the eatables, the ball was again set rolling for the all comers, and consolation races, followed by the ladies' races and tilting in the ring ; after which Mrs Taylor kindly distributed the prizes to the winners and several small gifts to the juveniles. The boys' swimming race was the next event, and resulted in a dead heat between Price and Mansel, but as the Maori boy declined to swim off, the first prize was awarded to Price. In the greasy boom contest the flag was taken on first trial by George Edge and W. Eeynolds ; when these again tried their skill the former proved victorious. Messrs Pearson, Going, and J. Goashore also entered, but the boom was too greasy for them. In the evening a few paired off to the school room for a few hours dancing to wind up the day's pleasure.
