MARERETU.

{From our oicn Corctpondent.) Setttybks here will be gratified to learn that our councillor. Mr B. T. Birt, has received a letter from Wellington . conveying the welcome intelligence that a vote of £500 has been placed on the estimates -for the further continuation of the Mareretu- WaikieMe road from the Kikownite Eiver towards Mangapai. Now that the money has been granted it behoves pur representative in the council and the settlers generally to bestir themselves and see that the road is speedily started, as the money will lapse at the end of the present financial year.

Our spiritual requirements are still attended to by the Bev. T. F. Jones, of Paparoa, and his most acceptable labours are now supplemented by Messrs H. M. Hudspith, J. P. Evans, E. Hames, T. W. Wilson, and other lay preachers of the Wesleyan persuasion. The new Wesleyan Chapel is now about completed, and great preparations are being made for the soiree which is to be held in celebration of the opening. Intense heat has prevailed here during the past few weeks. The pastures are completely burnt up, and the conntry is enveloped with smoke caused by the large bush fires raging in this and the adjacent districts.

Nothing new has transpired respecting the alleged discovery- of gold in the Mareretu ranges.

There is some talk of starting a mutual improvement class in Mareretu. Some such institution is certainly much nc-eded for the instruction and amuser.i_ut of the young people.
