Auckland, Thursday. At the Supreme Oourt Mrs Violet McPhee was found guilty of setting fire to the furniture in her house, and sentenced to. three ; years penal servitude. Being pregnant sentence mitigated. 0. Patterson, for assaulting Isabella Lowder got six weeks, while a charge against Alfred Campbell broke down on- a technical flaw, one
indictment alleged that prisoner had been sworn ou the Holy Gospel, whereas Registrar swore that, the prisoner, being a Jew, had been sworn on a Hebrew Bible. A man named David Henderson, while jacking logs in Whenuakite bush on Tuesday, received injuries! from which he died yesterday. * | The police last night made a raid on a grocery store in Wakefield Street, kept by a Chinaman named Ai. Chee, and seized twelve cases of Chinese brandy. In a back room they found an opium den, beds, and pipes, whilo down stairs thero was a room with fan tan counters, etc., lying about. The Apple Farm Company is to be wound up with a view to reforming. Hawera, Wednesday. The Key. H. Clere, vicar of Twickenham, Somersetshire, England, committed suicide this morning at the Hawera Parsonage, whero he was staying as a guest, by hanging himself to a bedpost. The deceased was 70 years old. Blenheim, Thursday. Afire broke out in the Criterion Hotel this morning, and before extinguished destroyed about £50,000 worth of property, viz., Criterion Hotel, Barber's Buildings, Colonial Bank, and thirty of the most important business premises. Wellington, Thursday. It is understood that Baddeley, at present R.M. of Ashburton, has been appointed as a Sheriff and second Magistrate for Auckland. He is still in Wellington arranging matters in connection with the Kaihu Valley Railway, but leaves for Auckland this afternoon. He has been urging upon the Government the desirability of letting another section of the Kaipara* Railway north of Kaukapakapa. He has been assured that surveys are being made with all despatch, and that tenders will be called as soon as possible to carry out the vote of £70,000 which was made the session before last. Dunedin, Wednesday. James Allen, who is opposing the Premier for Dunedin East, addressed the electors this evening, and received a vote of confidence.
