Petone S.D.P.

! At Ranfurly Hall on Sunday Evening, Mr. A. M. Hall—a visitor from Timaru—gave an interesting address : entitled, "Religious, Political and Industrial Causes and Cures of War." Ho cited the opinion of Archbishop Carr, of Melbourne, who contended thatGod often ordained war on earth on account of the infidelity of the people, and also Canon Green, of England, who stated that the war was a divine judgment, on account of that country being drunken and immoral. Mr. Rushbrook had also declared that war was brought about by the failure of the Christian churches recognise Christ's precept: Peace on Earth, Goodwill toward men.. Tho speakeT contended Robert Owon was the first to advocate reason and international arbitration for settling all disputes. He considered that even under the present competitive system it would bo possible -to form an International Army and Navy to see that international awards wero carried • out. The lecture, a very interesting one, evidently left food for reflection, judging by tbo numerous questions that wero put and answered by the speaker in a very able manner. At the conclusion of the meeting a very animated and interesting' discussion took place between members and the. speaker, relative 'to . the subject matter lie had spoken. oh. Thv=< meeting concluded ftith a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker. There was a good attendance.
