TARATU AND GREEN ISLAND.
Owing to tho conditions under which the Taratu coal mine has to bo worked. tho proprietors have not considered it expedient in the past to allow the men to work on tho system obtaining in other Otago mines of permitting them to ballot for fresh places every three months. The Taratu miners, however, have now forwarded a request to the proprietors that the "cavil" system be introduced in their mine forthwith.
The miiieis employed at the Green Island collieries have forwarded (o the piopriotors a reference as to their demands for .an. increase of wages and improved conditions. The demands as a whole are practically similar to those put forward by the. Kaitangata miners —an increase in hewing rates, a rise of 2s. (>d. per day for shift men. and tho taking over of the trucking by the employers. It is considered that, the parties concerned will bo able to come to an amicable agreement. — "Otago Times."
