The Storm at Hokitika.

MUCH DAMAGE DONE.

THE SFA IN THE MAIN StREET

llokitika, April S

The raging sea continued to-night to imne inroads into the back premises of those living on. the western side of Revell street, the main thoroughfare, of the town. The erosion has been taking place for some months past, and much damage had been caused. I'roperty-owners have been busily engaged for some ' time past building walls to stop the sea entering into th, sections, but the protections, with few exceptions, have proved . f no avail. The prevailing heavy sea, coining on top at the spriag tides, is responsible for the present i.'iih ight. I;ie danger has been evident for some time, ut nevertheless the loss sustained to-night has been very considerable. As a result i. of the recent storm, one resident at least has had to remove his place of abode,, while in addition to this about a dozen or more business premises are somewhat seriously affected. It is hoped that the improved weather conditions prevailing .just before midnight will have the effect of moderating the sea. and thereby remove the present ugly aspect of affairs. It is estimated that several thou-si-n Is of pounds damage has already been caused. The sea was running into Revell street to-night, and the rear oi Messrs McKay and Sons' drapery

:s;»bli>hmeni was washed out to sea. \ willing band of workers assisted to remove the goods towards the front portion of the promises. As late as ll.;;u p.m. the sea was still causing havoc.

Although considerable loss lias been .luiain.d during the past few months, tre. erosion had not effected the main building*, but the recent heavy sea has reached these, and the outlook is soniew hat alarming.
