St. Paul’s Tennis Club has opened its 1945-46 season writh over 50 members. Mr. Howard Reynolds is club captain and Miss B. Beazer secretary.

The value of the kitchen equipment stolen from the pavilion of the Feilding Lawn Tennis Club is estimated by Mr. Geo. Darragh, tho club’s secretary, at about £22.

The Xmas holidays to be observed by the retail shops of Feilding have not yet been fixed but an early meeting of tho retail committee of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce is to bo held to decide the question.

The question of shops closing for the Feilding Show on People’s Day was mentioned at Monday’s meeting of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce. Mr. G. J. Fitzpatrick suggessted that the retailers’ committee of tho Chamber be recommended to agree to a half-holiday. This was agreed to but not unanimously one member asking for his name to be recorded against the proposition.

For proceeding onto the Aorangi bridge at Feilding w’hile live stock was moving over the structure, E. P. Bunny, of Wellington, was lined 10s at the Feilding Magistrate’s Court yesterday by Mr. A. Coleman S.M. A line of £2 was imposed on A. S. Vallance of Masterton for exceeding the speed limit with a trailer attached to his car and for failing to have a sticker attached to the trailer was fined 10s.

The matter of providing for Feilding a better mail connection with settlers on the Mt. Biggs’ area was mentioned at Monday’s meeting of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce when it was recalled that the mail originally was despatched from Feilding but now it is sent off from Palmerston North. It was stated that there was a prospect of an adjustment being made which would provide an improved service.

Although the Electricity Controller could not grant Feilding’s request for the reinstatement of verandah lighting just yet, Mr. P. G. Guy stated at Monday’s meeting of the Chamber of Commerce that the PoTver Board was giving the question oi providing improved lighting for business purposes very full consideration and he felt that something would be done. It was agreed to request the Power Board to provide for festive season lighting in tho business area.

Congratulations were extended to Mr. I. B. Goldlinch, president of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce at the meeting on Monday evening when ho announced the names of 20 new members whom he hud secured. The names u r ere: Messrs K. Haybittle, M. Knight, K. Noble, L. Nicholson, R. A. Hooper, A. Wilson, M. W. McCardle, R. Hooker, P. Straw bridge, L. Hoggard, S. Bramwell, G. Clarke, H. Meads, C. W. Burn, li. R. Hill, C. B. Thomas, J. Barnard, R. J. H. Lloyd and .Carter, and Mrs. A. J. Miller. Returning thanks Mr. Goldfinch acknowledged that he had received help from members of the executive.

The death occurred recently at New Plymouth at the advanced ago of 88 years of Mr. A. Brake, well known throughout the Dominion ns a master builder of organs, it is interesting to recall that Mr. Brake built the organs in tho Methodist and Presbyterian Churches in Feilding many years ago anu there are citizens in the town today who will remember Mr. Brake as one wliose versatility has earned him a colourful and brilliant lifetime. Mr. Brake was instrumental in the creation of numerous inventions, this being recognised by the British Government vvnrch declared him a member of the Inventors’ institute and presented him with a certificate and the right to use the title, ilis passing last week-end removes an outstanding personage who contributed much during his lifetime.

It was agreed that the deputation which is to wait on the Postmaster-General over the Apiti mail should at the same time engage the Minister on this question.
