Mr. R. Girling Butcher, Inspector of Fire Brigades and Mr. H. R. Brown, of the Fire Service Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, visited Feilding yesterday and met at short notice the members of the local Fire Board and Borough Council. The visit was for the purpose of discussing the proposed reorganisation of the Dominion’s lire fighting service as set out in the report of the Select Committee on Local government. So far as the Feilding Fire Board is concerned it is anticipated that no administrative changes are likely. The visitors discussed generally the recommendations of the Select Committee as affecting Fire Boards and answered a number of questions. The automobile association organisation of New Zealand has become an institution in the lives of the community. Patrols are often called upon for a variety of services. At the meeting of the Wanganui Association on Wednesday evening a patrol reported that during the storm over the North Island late in October when the highways became blocked and the main trunk was blocked just north of Taumarunui he had received an appeal from the Railway Department to provide a route through to Taumarunui for railway engineers. It was an urgent request for information and despite the stormy weather conditions the patrol was able to provide a route at 10 o’clock at night enabling the engineers to get through to their destination.
