Ran Black Market
U.S. ARMY LINEN LONDON. Vast black market sales of stolen U.S. Army stores led to prison sentences at Bristol Assizes on eight men. The thefts, which resulted in months of inquiries in which C.I.D. officers made several journeys to France, had previously ended in nine American soldiers being sentenced by U.S. courtsmartial to long terms of hard labour. The joint' charges heard concerned more than 3300 bed sheets, thousands of pillow cases and hundreds of blankets, stolen from an American depot Hear Taunton. Evidence by an Amorican officer showed that no proper check was kept on the stores, and it was easy for dishonest soldiers to load up lorries aud drive away. They touted for customers in Taunton and Weston-super-Mare. The thefts and black market sales went on for several months. Then it was noticed that certain U.S. soldiers were sending home larger sums of money than they could possibly save out of their‘pay. That began the in vestigations.
