MANAWATU CLUB Reference to the fact that the Mauawatu Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club had increased its membership by 24 was made at the annual meeting of the club. The men’s bowling section had 114 players last season as against 98 iu 1943-44, the croquet section had 37 as against 35, the tennis section 31 as against 24 and the women’s bowling section 10 as against 11. This was the highest membership the club had ever enjoyed. The tennis section was, however, in the doldrums. The balance-sheet showed that the income was £665 and the expenditure £521. The club now needed a. fulltime greenkeeper on account of the large membership. Notice had been given at the last annual meeting of a motion that the different sections should each elect a vice-president to the club, and after a brief discussion this was defeated. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr. A. E. Mansford; president, Mr. F. Holder; vfee-president, Mr. N. Currie; auditor, Mr. E. R. Dale; executive, Messrs D. Lovelock, C. Drew, W. E. Winks, and Mesdames Baxter, Bradfield, Radford, Colwell, A. Eades, R. H. Billens and R. A. Brace; green supervisors, Messrs Levy and A. W. Hudson. The appointment of a secretary-treasur-er was left to a committee consisting of Messrs Holder, Levy, H. Christmas, and E. Persson to complete. It was decided to hold opening day on October 6. On the motion of Mr. Christmas, it was resolved to place on record the services rendered by Mr. Levy. It was stated he had done much for the club, especially in his capacity as green supervisor. TAKARO CLUB There was an attendance of about 40 at the annual meeting of the Takaro Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club. Mr. J. Wass presided. It was pointed out in the course of discussion, that the loss on the year’s working umounted to £Bl I6s, and of this £65 was accounted for in wages, as the caretaker’s services had been retained throughout the year. Mr. A. Cooksley urged caution in regard to expenditure, and the president said that better playing areas had been secured; new members could not be obtained and current members retained unless good amenities were offered. Several speakers referred to the state of the greens and the club property in general, complimentary reference being made to the advice given by Mr. E. Bruce Levy. A letter was received from the City Council stating that it made an offer of £450 for a section of land at the corner of Botanical Road and Featherston Street, but the vendor had sought £550. There was a general discussion on the subject, and the incoming committee was given power to carry the matter forward with the council. The election of officers resulted:—Patron, Mr. R. Tanner; president, Mr. C. Thompson; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Christie and W. Mortland; secretary and treasurer, Mr. D. Spring; auditor, Mr. A. Carter; green supervisor, Mr. F. Hearsey; committee, the sections to appoint their representatives.
