Kauwhata

(From Our Own Correspondent.) To mark the attainment of their ninth birthday the Kauwhata Maori Women’s Institute held a successful euchre and dance in the Te Arakura Hall recently. Tho hall was gaily decorated with spring flowers and native sprigs. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr. I. Lawton. The Kauwhata Institute’s president, Mrs. A. Poananga, was present, wearing a model gown of wine sheer georgette with beaded accessories. She extended a welcome to visiting sister institutes and friends. Prior to the cutting of the decorated birthday cake bearing the nine candles, Mrs. H. Cribb, the oldest member of the institute, was asked to light the candles, while Miss E. Knowles, the youngest member, blew them out. Sister institutes were represented by Miss E. Hansen, Te Arakura Institute’s president, wearing a floral gown; Mrs. A. Waaka, Awahuri, wearing a black georgette frock and white bolera; Mrs. Allan, Taonui, black frock. All extended their best wishes to the Kauwhata Maori Institute. Each was presented with a shoulder spray made by Mrs. C. O ’Reilly. Items were rendered by Mrs. A. Waaka (song), Miss E. Knowles (kulu dance), Miss N. Tutley (whistling number), action songs and' poi dances by members qf the institute. Extras were played by Mrs. F. Cowan. A spot waltz was won by Mrs. I. Lawton and W. Ivingi, lucky Gay Gordons by Miss J. Marsden and partner, and a waltzing competition by Mr. and Mrs. G. Packer (Feilding'). Winners of the euchre were Mrs. A. Poananga and Mr. R. Goffe. Sgt. Toi Graham, who was a member of the Y.M.C.A. in England, has returned to the district. A cordial welcome was extended to him in the, Kauwhata Meeting House in true Native fashion. Pte. William (Bill) Royal, son of Mr. Royal, is safe in England and is expected home shortly. A. B. H. Emery is the guest of his sister, Mrs. K. Lewis, Kauwhata. Mrs. Ngareta Kingi, of Otorohanga, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. T. Kingi. Mrs. D. Downs and Miss K. Kingi have just returned from a visit to Taumarunui. Great plans are being made for the renovating of the Kauwhata Catholic Church, also the Kauwhata Dining Rooms.

Miss Joan Nees, who for some years has been a dental nurse in Feilding, has left the town for Wellington, where she will take up an appointment as secre-tary-nurse for Mr. Alfred Dickens, a surgeon-dentist in the city.
