S.P.C.A.
At the monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals a full attendance of the executive gave close attention to various phases of animal welfare covering a wide sphere. A welcome was extended by Mr. W. A. Jacques (chairman) to two new members of the committee. A special feature of this month's report was the volume of information gathered by the Society's inspector (R. H. James) relative to the bobby calf trade with particular emphasis on the number of calves railed out of this district each season to freezing works as far distant as Patea. Details were given in connection with the recent interview by representatives of the Society with Hon. Mr. Roberts, Minister of Agriculture and officials of his department when facts and figures were presented in support of the Society’s efforts to have regulations gazetted making it compulsory that calves shall be slaughtered at works nearest the point of collection. The hon. secretary read correspondence from Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki and Canterbury indicating similar concern in their districts. From advice received a Dominion conference of all affiliated societies will be held in Christchurch this year when this matter will receive prior consideration. An extensive programme was completed for the coming season’s operations which, when implemented, will cover every aspect of animal welfare in the society’s district.
