Supplies of Thigh Gumboots Expected
MINISTER’S REPLY TO FARMERS’ UNION Allegations that while thigh gumboots were available to Chinese market gardeners they were not procurable by farmers for draining work were made by Mr. A. B. Saint (Ohau) at a meeting of the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union in Palmerston North yesterday. At a previous meeting it was decided to write to the Minister of Supply (Hon. D. G. Sullivan) pointing out the difficulty in securing various sizes of thigh gumboots and requesting that a wider range bo made available. A reply was received from Mr. Sullivan stating that at the moment no thigh gumboots at all could be made available because stocks imported by the Government some 10 months ago were now exhausted and local production was still very small. Further supplies of thigh gumboots were expected from overseas and issues would be effected just as soon as they came to hand. In regard to inquiries for a wider range of sizes it was understood that in the supplies expected there would be little room for complaint. Mr. W. Hume said that as a representative of the market gardeners he moved around among them and he had not noticed that they had received thigh gumboots. The Minister’s letter was received.
