Women’s Institutes

GLEN OROUA The June meeting was presided over by Mrs. A. Saunders (president). Letters were read from three soldiers overseas, thanking members for parcels received. Telegrams and wreaths wore sent to relatives of the late Mrs. Churchill. Mrs. Wilkinson presented her report. Mrs. Foster thanked Airs. Saunders for making the birthday cake, ingredients being donated by various members, also to Mrs. C. Hamlin for icing. A letter of appreciation is to be sent Airs. Penketk for her work as hospital visitor and a donation of 10s to help her in her work. Aire. J. Saunders (Palmerston North) donated £1 to the general fund. An anonymous donation of £1 was sent in for the soldiers’ parcels fund, while proceeds of the luncheon sale handed in for the fund were £1 2s 3d. Those who drew parcels for next mouth were Alesdames Fuller, F. Wheeler, Peed and Hill. The roll call, “household hints,” brought forward help to many. Mrs. Wilkinson continued the Golden Thread on New Zealand Pioneer Women. Airs. A. Saunders is to purchase wool to fill the squares for a patchwork quilt. A competition was won by Mrs. Davey, hostesses being Alesdames Payne, Schaw, McEwen and Aliss Hill. Competitions resulted: —Seniors: Cooking. Airs. Boswell 1, Airs. Grayson 2, Aliss N. Webb 3; knitting, Aliss R. Hill 1, Airs. Payne 2, Aliss Webb and Airs. Smith equal 3; bloom, Airs. Dyer 1, Airs. Vallender 2, Alesdames Lawlor and Grayson equal 3. Juniors: Cooking, Aliss N. Boswell 1; sewing, Aliss it. Vallender 1, Aliss N. Boswell 2, Miss S. Anderson 3; bloom, Aliss It. Vallender I. Hostesses fsr next month will be Alesdames Reed, Fuller, Wallace and Miss Parker; Competitions to be live, queen cakes, coathanger (material covered), bloom, roll call (“A Favourite Song”). WHAKARONGO There was a fair attendance at the June meeting, Airs. Eagle presiding. A letter from Nurse W. \autier, who is in Italy was received thanking the Institute for a parcel she had received. The schedule for the spring flower show was revised. A lecture on the making of loose covers was ably given by Mrs. J. Gator and samples were shown. A vocal duet was rendered by Alesdames J. Lacey and H. Dawson. Soldiers’ parcels for this month go to Nurse W. Vautier and D. Closey, to be packed by Alesdames A. Frith and J. Alorris. Competitions for next month are to be best bloom, cluster, cabbage and a pair of hand-knitted gloves made on two needles. Competitions for the afternoon resulted:—Best bloom, Mrs. J. Laeev 1, Afrs. Archer 2, Airs. Smith 3; cluster, Airs. Williamson 1, Airs. Archer 2, Alesdames Atkinson and Eagle equal 3; three carrots, Mrs. Pederson I, Airs. Lacey 2, Airs. Clark 3; sugar bag apron, Airs. Henricksen J, Airs. Smith 3, Airs. Atkinson 3. Hostesses were Alesdames Clark, Crawford and Archer.

NEWBURY The June meeting was presided over by Airs. J. Lancaster. The motto was supplied by Airs. E. Doherty. Airs. Goodman of Awahuri and Aliss E. A. Cox of Palmerston North were welcomed as visitors. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to a former mem ber’s husband, Air. E. W. Collins. It was decided to enter a play for the drama festival in August. The juniors are to present “Tho imaginery Aunt,” with All's. J. Lancaster as producer. Members are to be formed into three groups, each group to raise money for local soldiers’ funds. Tho July meet ing is to take the form of a social afternoon, run by the juniors, and will coni mence at 1.30 p.m. A bring and buy stall will be held. In the evening a social evening is to be held with games and dancing, to be advertised in a futuro issue. A knitted girl’s cardigan has been donated by Airs. J. Lancaster. An interesting talk was given by Airs. Fenton, her subject being tho blitz on London. She was heartily applauded. Congratulations were extended to Aliss U. James on her recent engagement to Mr. J. Turner.

Next month’s competitions are as follows:—Seniors and juniors: An article made from men’s old working sox, the hostesses to be Alesdames G. Gore, M. Hansen and L. Passey 2, Airs. S. De’Atli 3; small bloom, Airs. S. De’Ath 1, Aliss Passey 2, Mrs. L. Healey 3. At the committee meeting which was held at the residence of Air. and Mrs. C. Cameron, Airs. J. Lancaster presided. Congratulations were extended to Mrs. J. Alacaulay on her wedding anniversary. The programme for the monthly competitions for the next four months were drawn up and is as follow: August, Juniors: Table centre; seniors, silk crochet-covered coat hanger. September: Juniors, hand made handkerchief; seniors, nut and raisin loaf. October Juniors, appliqued tea towel; seniors, print apron, with, bib front.

November: Juniors, Scrapbook from loose-leaf folio; . seniors, child’s petticoat of winceyette. TABLE ELAT. Tlio June meeting was held a week late owing to illness and Miss Elliott presided over a fair attendance. Next month’s competitions are to be a chocolate cake (not sponge), plain machine sewn flour-bag pillowcase and a jamdish of violets or primroses, also the garden circle best bloom. Miss Bachelor, a visitor, and Mrs. B. Miller, judged the competitions which resulted: Best bloom, Mrs. Micholson 1, Mrs. 11. Jensen 11, Mrs. Pettigrew 3; custard tart in a saucer, Mrs. If. Jensen 1, Airs. Elliott 2 and 3; soup plate as a floating bowl, Mrs. Micholson 1, Mrs. 11. Jensen 2 and 3; baby’s singlet, Mrs. H. Jensen 1, Mrs. Pettigrew 2, Mrs. A. E. lieMurtrie Jr. 3. Miss Bachelor won a social competition, and ‘ members participated in a roll call, “the three best things in life.” Mrs. B. Miller and Airs. A. E. AlcMurtrie served afternoon tea. KAUWHATA For the June meeting of the Kauwliata Women’s Institute memoers were entertained at the home of the president-, Mrs. A. Poananga, Eerguson ►Street, Palmerston North, where pleasant entertainment had been arranged. The president extended a cordial welcome, particularly mentioning the visitors, including Airs. Al. Cowley, of Walt Cake City, Utah, Airs. \Y. AI. McClelland, federation president, Alesdames Claridge and Pene; executive members, Mrs. fcimith tb'tuwai), also Aliss iv. ytocker, drama tutor. Airs. Cowley held the interest of the company telling of some of the organisations with whicu she was associated such as the Britishfcjpeaking Union and Bed Cross Society, \sith incidents of travel. Aliss Stocker spoke on the development of drama in tne Women’s Institutes, and Mrs. AlcClelland conveyed greetings from the executive, Mrs. Pene adding her good wishes. Mrs. Waaka (secretary) returned thanns to the speakers. Afternoon tea was enjoyed and an appreciaI tion to the hostess conveyed by Mrs. McClelland.

RANGIOTU The Juno meeting was presided over by Mrs. Andrew wflo welcomed a failnumber of members and friends. Soldiers’ letters were read, thanking members for parcels. Aliss Jepsen kindly displayed the box of gifts which she received from a grateful soldier. The making of a quilt for the Federation competition was discussed and Mrs. Beard offered to make a sample square and bring it to the next meeting. It was decided to pack parcels for the patriotic committee on July 3. The competition for a baby’s dress worked and donated by Aliss Hunt was won oy a visitor from Palmerston North. Under the able tuition of Airs. L. Beard, folk dancing was enjoyed for the remaining part of the afternoon. Competitions resulted: Felt article, Airs. Jepsen 1, Aliss Jepsen 2, Airs. Jepsen and Airs. Griffin equal 3; chocolate cake, Airs. Jepsen 1, Airs. Andrew 2, Airs. Russell 3,; bloom, Mrs. Jepsen 1, Airs. Andrew 2, Airs. Beard 3; cluster, Airs. Jepsen 1, Airs. Beard 2, Mrs. Andrew and Miss Jepsen equal 3. Next month’s programme will be folk dancing, apple tart (without butter) and knitted hot water bag cover competi tions.
