(From Our Own Correspondent.) The June meeting was presided over by Mrs. G. Fenton. Being an open evening there was a very good attendance of members, their husbands, also visitors from Newbury, Te Arakura and the surrounding districts. On entering the hall one was greeted with a most cheery atmosphere, the hall being gaily decorated with winter shrubs and berries, bunting and banners. The meeting opened with the “Ode to Friendshipafter which the president extended a warm welcome to the company. Owing to Mrs. Lucas (secretary) being away on holiday, Mrs. E. O. Bond took her place for the meeting. The motto was given by Mrs. Goodman. A hat trimming competition for men only, all men present entering, caused much amusement and the results were amazing, prize-winners being: Mr. F. Brock 1, Mr. Browning 2, Messrs. K. Mathews and W. G. Fenton equal 3, the judges being Mrs. Holmes and Miss Hansen; knitting, Airs. Good man .1, Airs. Fenton 2, Mrs. E. Thompson 3; flower, Airs. C. Thompson I, Airs. E. O. Bond 2, both competitions being judged by Alesdames Lancaster and Johnson. Air. Orr gave a most interesting account of his experiences whilst a prisoner of war in Greece and of his escape. He stressed most strongly his gratitude to the Greek people who had helped hundreds of other boys and himself to escape, feeding and caring for them as one of their own. Airs. Fenton thanked Air. Orr. Supper was served by members after which two competitions were won by Alcssrs. Goodman and F. Brock, while Airs. Lund w r on the prize for the lucky cup. The floor was cleared for dancing, the music being provided by Mr. AI. Bennett and Air. Ward, AI.C. Thanks were extended to both by Mrs. Bond on behalf of all present. Air. Fenton, on behalf of all men present, congratulated the Institute on its fine work and splendid evening’s entertainment and hoped that there would be many more, wishing the W.I. every success.
