Court Session
When the monthly session of the Magistrate's Court was held at Pahiatua yesterday, two Wellingtonians, William Harold Davis, an indent merchant, and Archibald Walker Banks, a chemist, both pleaded guilty to a charge laid against each of them for selling liquor without a licence. The circumstances were related to Mr. H. P. Lawry S.M., by Detective Long, of Palmerston North. The defendant Davis purchased 10 dozen Gilby’s Gin from an American and the deal was financed by the defendant Banks. The gin was sold and delivered by both defendants to a Pahiatua hotelkeeper. Mr. W. R. Tuckwell, of Wellington, who appeared for both defendants, stated that Davis was an old friend of the Pahiatua hotelkeeper and only £6 profit was made on the transaction which was consistent with the statement that the transaction was arranged out of consideration of such friendship. The Magistrate held that there was no question of the liquor having been tampered with, and that it was genuine. There was no need for him to consider sending the defendants to gaol, but 1 nevertheless the offence was a serious I one and each defendant would be fined F £3O with costs £1 13s (Id in each case. | A. L. Dickens, of Makuri, was charged with allowing a horse bo wander on the County roads aud was fined 10s with court costs 12s, witnesses' expenses 10s and solicitor’s fee £1 Is.
