British Music Society

The Palmerston North branch of the British Music Society (N.Z.) Inc., held its seventh annual general meeting last night in Miss E. M. Rawlins’ studio. There was a largo gathering present. The annual report stated that interest in the activities of the society had been maintained. The concerts had been well attended and the combined group and the gramophone group had met regularly. There were 150 members on the roll at the close of the year, as for the previous year. A number of members resigned because of transfers from Palmerston North, but the loss was made up by the enrolment of new members. The society concluded the year with a credit balance of £26 12s Id, as compared with £lO 9s 8d at the close of the previous year. With this improvement in the financial status, it is hoped that it will be possible for the society to bring artists from further afield for the concerts in the comin." year. The society had participated in the presentation of two of the six free concerts arranged by the Palmerston North Civic Centre Association. Thanks were due ,to the secretaries, Miss Iris Sutherland and Miss Edna Eyre, upon whom had fallen the major portion of the organisational work. The continued success, of the society was largely due to their enthusiastic interest in its welfare. The committee wiJs grateful also to Miss Rawlins for the use of her studio for meetings and particularly indebted to the C. # M. Ross Co. for many courtesies received in connection with the presentation of concerts in the Rosco tearooms. The chairman (Dr. F. H. MeDowall) informed members that the first concert for the year would be on March 24, under the direction of Miss Dorothy Davies’ trio. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Dr. F. H. McDowall; vice-president, Dr. C. R. Barnicoat; sec-retary-treasurer, Miss I. M. Sutherland, assistant secretary, Miss E. Eyre; committee, Miss M. Anderson, Mrs. H. Harley, Mr, J. Bewley, Mrs. W.
