Germans Getting Out of Italy?
Allied Command Declines to Comment (By Telegraph-Press Assn.—Copyright.! LONDON, Feb. 19. According to Italian Fascists Hitler has definitely ordered Kesselring to evacuate Northern Italy, says the newspaper Chiasso der Bund. It adds that the evacuation is progressing. Motorised units are leaving via the Brenner Pass and heavy material is going to Graz by train. Forces are being rushed to the east in an attempt to forestall the Russian drive to Vienna. The British United Press’s correspondent at Zurich reports that columns of German troops are forced-marching from Northern Italy to Vienna, clogging all the passes leading to Austria and Slovenia. Four infantry divisions and one panzer grenadier division, formerly Kesselring’s reserve, are participating in this movement. The Associated Press’s correspondent in Rome says the Allied Command to-day decline to comment on the fresh reports of a withdrawal from Northern Italy. Even if some of Kesselring’s troops have moved out recently there is nothing yet to indicate a wholesale evacuation.
