FLOODS DELAY EXPRESS SOUTH OF TIMARU (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 20. The steumcr express for Wellington was held at Lyttelton for about four hours to-night waiting for passengers from south of Timaru who were expected to arrive at Christchurch by special train soon after midnight. They had travelled by the usual express from Invercargill until it was stopped at St. Andrew’s south of Timaru because of floods. New Zealand Railways road services buses and army lorries were used to take the passengers through tho flood waters to Timaru and the special train did not leave Timaru until 9.15, about five hours behind schedule. Passengers from Timaru and stations to the north of Timaru arrived in Christchurch shortly after 9 p.m. by another special train which went straight through to the ferry wharf.
The Christchurch manager of the Union Steamship Company (Mr. P. L. Hodge) said there were about 250 passengers for the North Island from south of Timaru. Miey would have been in a difficult position if they had arrived at Christchurch after midnight with nowhere to spend the night, and it had been decided to hold the boat *or them. Although rain fell throughout the province to-day there was no other carnage.
