DISASTROUS EFFECTS OF CONTINUOUS RAIN (Per Press Association.) TIMARU, Feb. 20. Continuous rain has caused floods in South Canterbury and has practically ruined ail cereal crops. The Invercargill express was marooned between Makikihi and St. Andrews by washouts before and behind it and it was not till nearly 11 o’clock tonight that the last of the passengers reached Timaru by bus. All the low laud between, the hills and the sea south of Timaru is under water and in. some instances wheat iu stook has been carried out to sea. Most of the standing crop has lodged and the wheat, oats and barley cut and stooked' is sprouting. The potato crops are blighted aud iu some localities the linen flax crops are deteriorating to such an extent as to be almost valueless. The constant rain has mode the season one of tho most disastrous iu the history of South Canterbury.
