Family Allowances Legislation in Britain

LONDON, Feb. 15. The Family Allowances Bill, the text of which is published to-day, gives wives an allowance of 5s a week for every child in the family except the first. It is estimated that there are 2,600,000 families who would benefit, with 4,400,000 children qualifying for weekly payment. This would mean a total cost of £57,000,000 a year, with an extra £2,500,000 if the school age were raised from 15 to 16. The cost of administration will be £2,000,000 a year. The Bill provides for the allowances to start on a date to be fixed after the war.
