America’s Mighty Naval Air Arm
17,000 PILOTS AND 31,000 PLANES Received Wednesday, 8.30 p.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 29. "Tile task force which for eight months so effectively scoured the Japanese was just a sweet summer zephyr compared with the ships, planes and other weapons now ready to lash ont.” This was stated hy Vice-Admiral Pitch, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air, on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the Air Arm. Admiral Fitch disclosed that tho Navy has approximately 100 carriers, including 11 of the mighty Essex type, which hy making bypassing tactics possible in the Pacific have placed the United States so close to Japan. “They covered MacArthur’s advance to Hollandia and without them we would probably be stall in the Marshalls. “The Navy with 17,000 pilots and 31,000 planes had multiplied its Air Army sevenfold since Pearl Harbour.” Admiral Pitch revealed that in the coming year at least two new weapons will he hurled against the foe—a twin-engined fighter and a scouting plane unmatched in speed, and range.
