17,000 PILOTS AND 31,000 PLANES Received Wednesday, 8.30 p.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 29. Admiral Fitch disclosed that tho Navy has approximately 100 carriers, including 11 of the mighty Essex type, which hy making bypassing tactics possible in the Pacific have placed the United States so close to Japan. “They covered MacArthur’s advance to Hollandia and without them we would probably be stall in the Marshalls. “The Navy with 17,000 pilots and 31,000 planes had multiplied its Air Army sevenfold since Pearl Harbour.” Admiral Pitch revealed that in the coming year at least two new weapons will he hurled against the foe—a twin-engined fighter and a scouting plane unmatched in speed, and range.
