Big Advance by Eighth Army in Italy

NOW ON RIM OF PO VALLEY Received Thursday, 1 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 30. “The Eighth Army taking the offensive reached a point 18 miles from the rim of the Po Valley,” says the Rome correspondent of the Associated Press. To-day’s Allied communique fro&a Italy states: “The Eighth Army continued to advance towards the Gothic Line on a broad front. There was stiff fighting in the Adriatic sector south of the Poglia River where all the high ground has been secured. Patrols reached the river in many places. The Allies occupied Bibbiena from which the road leads directly to the Gothic Line about five miles beyond.

“Advances were made in mountainous country east and west of Bibbiena up to three miles on a broad front. Eighth Army troops thrusting north from Pontassieve are now nearly five miles beyond the town and the enemy was forced to make a further withdrawal in this sector.”
