Five Years’ for Man Who Attacked Woman
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 29. A sentence of five years 1 hard labour was imposed on Leslie Ronald Shortcliffe, aged 23, a soldiqr and farrier, who came before the Chief Justice for sentence for rape. 11 Rape under all circumstances was a very serious offence,” said Mr. M. Myers, 11 and unfortunately yours was a grave offence even of its kind. The offence for which Shortcliffe was punished occurred in Palmerston North. To gain his ends, he first assaulted the young woman and detained her for four hours in a vacant section in Rangitikei Street, —from midnight till 4 a.m.
