More Newsprint for Australian Papers

SYDNEY, Aug. 30. A larger quota of newsprint will be issued to all daily, Sunday and weekly newspapers from October I. The Minister of Customs (Senator Keane) has announced this. The additional quota will be of 20 per cent., making a total increase of 45 per cent, since September 30 last year. Australian newspapers were indebted to the Government for the way in which it had maintained the importation ot newsprint and permitted the progressive relaxation of restrictions, commented Mr. R. A. Henderson (president oi the Australian Newspaper Proprietors Association.) The latest relaxation would result in the consumption oi about 87,000 tons of newsprint a year compared with Australia’s prewar consumption of 180,000 tons.
