Foxton

(From Our Own Correspondent.) At the monthly meeting: of the watu Drainage Board Trustee W. H. Smith presided. Also present were Trustees E. H. Robinson, £s. W. Barber, X. I. Easton and G. B. Cull. The chairman referred to the death on active service ot Corporal S. Carter who was a son of Air. W. S. Carter, a former member of the board, and asked the members to stand in silepce as a mark of respect. The treasurer reported that the bank balance i was £5Ol 0s 5d made up as follows: Credit, general account, £476 0s sd; interest account, £25 2s Id. Attention was! drawn to the recent report in the “Manu- \ watu Daily Times” of a meeting of the j Afanawatu -Oroua River Board, where Air. i J. Callesen, chairman of the board, stated definitely that at no time had the board ; been asked for locations or levels ol banks for any specified work. The secre- j tary stated that this statement was wrong as they had been asked both verbally and in writing. A letter was received I from Air. J. W. Barber, acting for the Estate of J. Barber, offering to pay the cost of digging out a block in the board’s drain at Wall’s boundary (half a chain) which had been caused by bullocks drinking. The trustees considered the offer very fair and decided to accept same with thanks. A letter was also receiyed from Air. S. T. Easton requesting an outlet for drains on his property at Whirokino. He stated that he had been promised an outlet in 193 S and in 1939 he contributed £3O towards the floodgates near Duck Creek, which, would have been quite a success if they had been built on sound foundations. All'. Easton stated that his property was the lowest in the board's area and was now only a reception pond for flood water and drainage which at the present time only gets away by evapora tion, so ho hoped that the board would see that he still did not have an outlet as promised. He also desired to draw the board’s attention to the stopbank near where the floodgate had been washed out, stating that the stopbank had sunk by two feet as the result of recent earthquakes. The board considered that the matter should be looked into and appointed Trustees E. H. Robinson, G. B. Cull and N. 1. Easton to inspect and report back to the board. A report received from H. V. Bond, engineer of the Afanawatu County Council, on the question of strengthening the j&fain drain by making a deviation in the property owned by Air. F. S. Easton was discussed. Air. Bond stated that he was of the opinion that although the proposal would not be a large undertaking, it would be a definite improvement. However, he considered that an approach be made to get the property owner to agree to the lowering of the drain bank at the terminal points of the proposed deviation, so that the flood waters could flow over the new alignment. The main proposal of making a new channel is to be left in abeyance. With, reference to the matter of flattening the heaps of spoil excavated from the Main drain from time to time so that the dragline plant could be transported to, or traverse under its own power to any point along the drain, it was considered that the council’s bulldozer was too small for the work. Foreman’s report: During the month 16 chains of the mile drain had been cleared and deepened to an average of two feet, and stumps removed therefrom. The drain is heavy with swan grass and timber. The floodgates were attended to and driftfood removed. Mayoralty. Air- H. H. Podmore, a member of tbe Foxton Borough Council, will contest the Mayoral election against Air. At. E. Pcrreau (the present Mayor) at the forthcoming election. Members of the Oroua Bowling Club, through Air. C. Hausmann (president), have presented Air. F. S. Collier, clerk of the Feilding Magistrate’s Court, and a popular member of the club, with a barometer on the eve of his departure for Oamaru. Air. AY. Crook was associated with Air. Hausmann in expressing every good wisli to Air. Collier, who suitably replied. Smoking by juveniles is not encouraged in some of the South American cities. Boys and girls under IS caught smoking—in public —are liable to a heavy fine. Young smokers are better off in New Zealand, where they can indulge in the seductive cigarette in public without let or hindrance. Well, if they must smoke they should smoke “toasted" the purest and finest tobacco procurable. You can make ten of the choicest cigarettes (full-size) for sevenpence, or less, of either Riverhead Gold, Desert Gold or Pocket Edition, the three cigarette tobaccos chiefly in demand. For quality, bouquet, flavour and all-round excellence they are simply unequalled. For pipesmokers there are three beautiful toasted brands: Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish and Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), so good that many smokers prefer them' to anything from over the water. One of their distinguishing merits is their purity. The toasting to which they are subjected at. the factor)* makes them safe for even the dyed-in-the-wool smoker. And bo it noted—these are the only toasted tobaccos manufactured.
