Fire in Wheat Field

An outbreak of fire which might have had more sei'lous consequences occurred on Friday afternoon in a large wheat Held, partly harvested, owned by Mr. C. ICay, of Sanson, and situated on Frecklington’s Line, Ohakea. Apparently caused by the dropping of a lighted match the flames, fanned only by a light breeze, soon took hold of the standing stubble and swept across the field. A band of willing helpers soon appeared on the scene and after a strenuous halfhour succeeded in beating out the flames not before plantations and buildings on Mr H. Redpath’s property were seriously threatened. Fortunately the wind drove the flames away , fr ? m * h ® : 0"* , of ll ? e crop still unharvested and Mr Kay's on'y loss amounted to one bag of wheat. A band of firefighters from tho ohakea aerodrome arrived, but their services .were not required.
