Heavier Lambs Will be Welcomed

Although the meat schedules for the current season have not yet been announced there is talk of heavier lambs being welcomed because of the threatened shortage of meat. For some time those closely connected with the meat trade have been aware of the trend of meat supplies related to war requirements and opinions have been expressed favouring heavier weights for lamb. There has always been a. premium on light weight lambs and the price per lb. reduces as the weight increases. As meat is required at Home it is considered that New Zealand should provide a heavier lamb and the method of arriving at this would be to maintain the higher price. This would encourage breeders to hold their lambs instead of racing ahead for early drafting in order to command the premium. The situation latterly has developed to suggest that there might arise occasion to ration meat and there is talk of something being done to encourage heavier weights in lambs.
