Britain’s New Civil Transport Plane

LONDON, Nov. 3. The Air Ministry has announced that Britain’s latest civil aircraft, which it is hoped will play a big part in postwar civil aviation, is the Avro York. It is a transport version of the Lancaster bomber, and is a high-wing, fourengined monoplane, with a wing span of 102 ft. and an overall length of 78ft. It is powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines which are liquid-cooled. It is designed especially for passenger or freight carrying and it may be used both for short haul traffic or as a long-distance aircraft. When employed at short range, it can carry over 50 passengers.
