Maori War Effort

Sub-tribal committees representing Otaki, Levin, Shannon, Palmerston North, Feilding, Kakariki, Poroutawhao and Ohau held their last monthly meeting at Ilokio. Air. Mason Jury was in the chair and opened the meeting by requesting those present to stand in silence in memory of the fallen. Difficulties in regard to rehabilitation were discussed in a general manner and it was decided to assist wherever possible. The secretary, Mr. Napier Winiata, reported the placing of further moneys in the Liberty Loan. Since tho committee was formed, nearly £2OOO had been contributed iu various ways towards the war effort. Notice was received of the requirements of the Department of Agriculture for vegetable gardeners in three localities for varying periods this season. After discussion, the committee thought that sufficient labour would be offering if working conditions and payment were made in conformity with those being given by other market gardeners. A contemplated Government Bill dealing with Maori Councils was before the committee for perusal. The committee’s representation to the local Manpower Officer was instrumental in the reinstatement of a Palmerston North member who was wrongfully dismissed from a City Council department. The next meeting w'ill be held in Otaki, on October 17.
