Two Prisoners Escape
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Hept. 9. Two prisoners who had been commit ted to the Supreme Court for sentence escaped from the prisoners ’ room at th< Police Court, a few minutes after th< hearing of their case. They had noi been recaptured to-night and were last reported to have been seen at Westmere. They are Owen Francis Neiling labourer, aged 21, and John Thomas Hurst, motor driver, aged 23. Both admitted joint charges of breaking and entering the premises of the BanWs Box Company and stealing an office safe and leather satchell of a total value of £ll, and of converting a motor car valued at £250. Both offences were committed on August 20. The men were returned to the prisoners' room after their case was heard but they were missing when a constable arrived to take them to gaol. The door leading into a lane at the back of the court building from the prisoners’ room wa» open. Extra police were immediately employed to search for the escapee men and warnings were broadcast at frequent intervals. Motorists wor* particularly warned not to leave ignition keys in their cars.
